Addiction affects the health, work, and family life of lawyers. Lawyers, like all people, may struggle with alcohol, other drugs, eating, gambling, sex or other addiction. There is hope; treatment works; recovery is possible.
The Other Bar
Please contact LHL board member Lance R. Duran about participation in The Other Bar. The Other Bar is a network of recovering lawyers and judges who are dedicated to assisting others within the profession who are suffering from alcohol and substance abuse problems. The Other Bar is founded on the principle of anonymity and provides services in strict confidentiality. The program is open to Utah lawyers, judges and law students.
The website of The Other Bar in California describes the organization in that state as well as the lengths to which lawyers who are in recovery go to in order to share their experience, strength and hope with others.
Many other 12 Step groups exist whose members help each other attain and maintain sobriety. The following is but a small sampling of 12 Step fellowships: Narcotics Anonymous Overeaters Anonymous Gamblers Anonymous Sex Addicts Anonymous
Further, there are many groups for families members and others who are affected by problem behavior of alcoholics and by other addicts. Al-Anon (and Alateen) are some of the better known of these groups. However, for any addiction for which there exists a 12 Step group there likely corresponds a 12 step group for family members and friends of the addict.
There are many treatment models and treatment providers. Kinds of treatment include one on one and group; outpatient, intensive outpatient, inpatient, and detoxification; traditional and in home; and many other models. There are many treatment providers in Utah, including the state (please see the Utah Department of Human Services Division of Substance Abuseand Mental Health or agencies such as the Utah Tobacco Prevention and Control Program for more information); religious groups; and various other private treatment providers. There are several inpatient treatment providers in Utah and there are many others out of state. LHL maintains relationships with several treatment providers and is pleased to provide referrals for assessment. If you or someone you know is struggling with problem drinking or another addiction, please seek help. Addiction is deadly and many people die from their substance or other abuse each year. You are not alone and there are many people who are waiting to help you or your loved one. For additional information on recovery, Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness maintains a helpful website.
