Utah Lawyers Helping Lawyers encourages members of the legal community to make healthy choices so as to deal positively with the stress which is inherent to the practice of law. There are many things which lawyers and other legal professionals can do to diminish the negative aspects of stress and conversely to increase wellness.
Positive steps which one can take to enhance wellness include developing appropriate and efficient law office management practices; implementing sound law practice area and client selection policies; maintaining proper work - life boundaries; choosing healthful nutrition and exercise; availing oneself of a supportive network of family and friends; enjoying interests outside the law; and taking time out to care for oneself.
Please read various articles by LHL board members and by others on positive ways to deal with stress which the Utah State Bar graciously published in the January February 2008issue of the Utah Bar Journal.
Further, should things ever seem to be too much, lawyers should avail themselves of the Utah State Bar free member benefit lawyer assistance programs, LHL and Blomquist Hale Consulting. You already pay for both of these services through your bar dues. These benefits are not merely for your piece of mind but for you to take advantage of to help you in your life. As in consulting lawyers for legal advice, in maintaining sound emotional and behavioral health, it often helps to speak to someone who will listen to your story with a fresh pair of ears. Additionally, as is often so in the practice of law, problems are more easily addressed the sooner one seeks help for to deal with them.
Finally, LHL is also pleased to invite members of the legal community to help relieve stress by participating in Yoga for Lawyers . Please contact LHL board member Mary Jane Wagg about this delightful yoga practice. In 2006, after practicing yoga for more than 10 years, Ms. Wagg earned her CYT-200 yoga teacher certification from Yoga Mountain in New York City, New York. Ms. Wagg is registered with Yoga Alliance.
